RED HEART Super Saver: One skein each 336 Warm Brown A, 365 Coffee B, 505 Aruba Sea C, 321 Gold D, 320 Cornmeal E, and 316 Soft White F Susan Bates® Crochet Hooks: 5.5mm [I-9 US] and 3.75mm [F-5 US]

Yarn needle, toilet tissue roll GAUGE: Gauge is not critical for this project.

Cover measures 4½” tall x 4½” diameter (11.5 x 11.5 cm)

Note

1. Cover is worked from top down in joined rounds. Do not turn unless instructed to do so.

2. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete stitch. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.

COVER

With larger hook and A, ch 2.

Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with slip st in first sc—6 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first sc—12 sc.

Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc —18 sc.

Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc—24 sc.

Round 5: Ch 1, [sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc—30 sc.

Round 6: Ch 1, [sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc—36 sc.

Round 7: Ch 1, [sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc—42 sc.

Tummy

With smaller hook and D, ch 2. Rounds 1–5: Work same as Rounds 1–5 of cover; change to E at end of Round 5.

Feathers

Round 6: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, ch 15, sc in next sc, [ch 15, sc] twice in next sc, ch 15, sc in next sc, ch 15, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * once; join with slip st in first sc—36 sc. Fasten off.

Feet

With right side facing and smaller hook, join D with slip st to 5th sc from last ch-15 space made. Row 1: [Ch 5, slip st in next sc] 4 times. Fasten off.

Beak

With smaller hook and D, ch 2.

Round 1 (right side): Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join, work in continuous rounds (spiral)—6 sc.

Rounds 2 and 3: Sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first st at end of Round 3. Fasten off. Eyes and Ears (make 2 each) With smaller hook and F, ch 2.

Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with slip st to first sc; change to B—6 sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc; join with slip st in first sc; change to C—12 sc.

Round 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc—18 sc.

Round 4: Ch 1, [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc; change to A—24 sc.

Round 5: Ch 1, [sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times; join with slip st in first sc—30 sc.

ASSEMBLY

Use photograph as a guide to placement of all pieces. With E, whipstitch tummy to cover. Position eyes over tummy with ears at top and pointing in opposite directions; with A, whipstitch eyes to cover. With D, whipstitch beak to cover centered between eyes and tummy.

FINISHING

Weave in ends. Insert toilet tissue roll in cover.
