- Chain (CH) 3, join with a slip stitch and form a circle. CH3 (turning chain; it counts as one stitch), double crochet (DC) 5 into the center of foundation circle.
- Join with slip stitch to turning chain.
- CH3, DC twice into each stitch around until there are 11 stitches, including the turning chain.
- DC once into last stitch and join turning chain with a slip stitch.
- CH3, DC twice into each stitch around until there are 23 stitches, including turning chain; DC once into last stitch and join turning chain with a slip stitch.
- CH2, DC twice into the next stitch, DC once into next step; repeat until there are 36 stitches, including the turning chain.
- Join turning chain with a slip stitch; work even in DC for 3 rounds.
- CH3, DC 26, leaving 9 stitches unworked for the forehead.
- Turn to wrong side (WS), CH3, DC 26; then, turn to right side (RS), CH3, DC 26.
- Turn to WS row, CH3, DC twice into the next 2 stitches, work 3 stitches from the end, DC twice into the next 2 stitches, DC once. Turn to RS row, CH3, DC twice into the next 2 stitches, DC1, slip stitch in the next stitch.
- Cut yarn and pull the end through the loop to secure.
- Place safety pin, or contrast yarn, to mark this last stitch (end of the left ear flap).
- Facing the RS, pull through a loop to join yarn to edge on the other side and make the right ear flap next row: CH3, DC twice into next 2 stitches, DC1, slip stitch in the next stitch.
- Last WS row: CH2, DC into edge stitch of hat beg with right ear flap; continue along outline of face and ear after the left ear flap marker.
- Work single crochet into each stitch across the back edge, join to beg of round with slip stitch.
- Cut yarn and secure end.
