This attractive crochet throw brings a warm welcome and a variation on everyone’s favorite granny square pattern! Stitched in our plush Bernat Blanket, the stitchwork is easy to memorize and fun to crochet. A great project for beginners, you’ll learn working in the round, double crochet, single crochet and chain stitches. Finished with chunky tassels, it’s bound to become a cuddly favorite in the family room, bedroom, or anywhere!

Bernat Blanket  (10.5 oz/300 g; 220 yds/201 m) Main Color (MC) Pale Gray (10046) 4 balls or 870 yds/795 m Contrast A Dorset (10806) 3 balls or 487 yds/445 m Size U.S. L/11 (8 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. Piece of cardboard 7″ [18 cm] wide for tassels. Yarn needle.

MEASUREMENT

Approx 57″ [144.5 cm] square, excluding tassels.

GAUGE

7 dc and 4 rows = 4″ [10 cm].

INSTRUCTIONS

Notes:

• Do not cut yarn at end of each rnd. At end of each rnd, pull last loop long to prevent unraveling and remove from hook. To beg each rnd, place loop of indicated color onto hook, tighten loop and proceed.

• Carry color not in use up WS of work. With MC, ch 5. Join with sl st to first ch to form ring. (See diagram ).

1st rnd: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch-1 sp). (3 dc. Ch 1) 3 times in ring. 2 dc in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-4.

2nd rnd: With A, sl st in 1st ch-1 sp. Ch 1. (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in same sp as last sl st. Ch 3. *(1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3. Rep from * twice more. Join with sl st to first sc.

3rd rnd: With MC, sl st in first corner ch-3 sp. Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch-1 sp). 3 dc in same sp as last sl st. 3 dc in next ch-3 sp. *(3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp. 3 dc in next ch-3 sp. Rep from * twice more. 2 dc in first ch-3 sp. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4.

4th rnd: With A, sl st in first ch-1 sp. Ch 1. (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in same sp as last sl st – corner made. Ch 3. (1 sc in sp between next two 3-dc groups. Ch 3) twice. *(1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in next ch-1 sp – Corner made. Ch 3. (1 sc in sp between next 2 groups of 3-dc. Ch 3) twice. Rep from * twice more. Join with sl st to first sc.

5th rnd: With MC, sl st in first corner ch-3 sp. Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch-1 sp). 3 dc in same sp as last sl st. 3 dc in each ch-3 sp to next corner ch-3 sp. *(3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc) in next corner ch-3 sp. 3 dc in each ch-3 sp to next corner ch-3 sp. Rep from * twice more. 2 dc in first ch-3 sp. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch-4.

6th rnd: With A, sl st in first ch-1 sp. Ch 1. (1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in same sp as last sl st. Ch 3. (1 sc in sp between next 2 groups of 3-dc. Ch 3) to next ch-1 sp. *(1 sc. Ch 3. 1 sc) in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3. (1 sc in sp between next 2 groups of 3-dc. Ch 3) to next ch-1 sp. Rep from * twice more. Join with sl st to first sc.

7th rnd: As 5th rnd. Rep 6th and 7th rnds until Blanket measures approx 57″ [144.5 cm] square, ending on a 7th rnd. Fasten off.

Tassels: (make 4).

Cut a piece of cardboard 7″ [18 cm] wide. Wind A around cardboard 60 times. Break yarn leaving a long end and thread end through needle. Slip needle through all loops and tie tightly. Remove cardboard and wind yarn tightly around loops 2″ [5 cm] below fold. Fasten securely. Cut through rem loops and trim ends evenly. Sew 1 Tassel to each corner of Blanket.
