  • Toy measures 6” high, seated.
  • RED HEART® With Love™: 1 skein each 1302 Caramel A, 1321 Chocolate B, 1303 Aran C, 1703 Candy Pink D, and 1012 Black E.
  • Crochet Hooks: 4mm [US G-6] and 3.5mm [US E-4]. Yarn needle, stitch marker, two ½” diameter black shank style buttons, hand sewing needle, matching sewing thread, stuffing; optional plastic pellets and 1 knee-high stocking, optional dental floss for attaching eyes.
  • GAUGE: 18 sts = 4”; 20 rows = 4” in sc with larger hook. Gauge is not important with this project as long as tightly crocheted stitches are achieved to prevent stuffing showing through.
  • RED HEART® With Love™, Art. E400, available in solid color 7 oz (198 g), 390 yd (357 m) and multi-color 5 oz (141 g), 230 yd (211 m) skeins.

NOTES

  1. Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise indicated.
  2. Legs are worked first and attached with sc as specified as rounds are being worked.
  3. Due to the weight of the head, adding a counter weight is recommended. Use about ¼ cup of plastic pellets stuffed in the toe of a knee high hose or a clean 1-1½” smooth pebble. In addition, to counter balance the head and allow the features to be seen properly, do not stuff the last 4 rounds of the body. This will allow the head_x000B_to flop down a bit so that facial features can be viewed
  4. If using post and washer eyes (safety eyes) rather than buttons, be certain to add them before the head is completed.
  5. Toys with weight inserts and button eyes are not suitable for babies.

 

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS

Inc (increase) = 2 sc in next sc.

Dec (decrease) = draw up a loop in next 2 sc, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

LEGS (Make 4)

Round 1: With (B) and larger hook, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook working over yarn tail – 6 sc. Pull yarn tail to close hole. Round 2: [Inc] 6 times – 12 sc. Round 3: [Sc in next sc, inc] 6 times – 18 sc. Rounds 4-6: Sc in each sc around. Round 7: [Sc in next sc, dec] 6 times – 12 sc. Round 8: [Dec, sc in next 4 sc] twice – 10 sc. Stuff paw firmly. Round 9: [Dec, sc in next 3 sc] twice – 8 sc. Rounds 10-18: If making light colored puppy change to C, otherwise continue with A. Sc in each sc around. Stuff leg very lightly as rounds are completed.

 Next Step: Hold the layers flat to close the top. Ch 1, sc through both layers in each sc across – 4 sc. Fasten off.

BODY

Begin at bottom. Rounds 1-3: With (C) and larger hook, repeat Rounds 1-3 same as for Legs – 18 sc. Round 4: [Sc in next 2 sc, inc] 6 times – 24 sc. Round 5: [Sc in next 3 sc, inc] 6 times – 30 sc. Round 6: [Sc in next 4 sc, inc] 6 times – 36 sc. Round 7-Attach 2 Legs: Sc in 27 sc, then holding first leg flush with edge, sc through all layers in next 4 sc, sc in next sc of body, attach 2nd leg sc through all layers in next 4 sts – 36 sc. Rounds 8-12: Sc in each sc around. Round 13: [Sc in next 4 sc, dec] 6 times – 30 sc. Round 14: [Sc in next 3 sc, dec] 6 times – 24 sc. Round 15: Sc in each sc around. Round 16: [Sc in next 2 sc, dec] 6 times – 18 sc. Stuff firmly beginning with optional plastic pellet packet first. Continue stuffing as rounds are made. Round 17-Attach 2 Legs: Sc in next 4 sc, holding first leg flush with edge, sc through all layers in next 4 sc, sc in next 5 sc of body, attach 2nd leg sc through all layers in next 4 sc, sc in last sc of body – 18 sc. Round 18: Sc in each sc around. Do not stuff remaining rounds. Round 19: [Sc in next sc, dec] 6 times – 12 sc. Rounds 20-21: Sc in each sc around. Fasten off leaving yarn tail for attaching head.

HEAD

Begin at muzzle. Rounds 1-6: With (C) and larger hook, work same as Body Rounds 1-6 – 36 sc. Rounds 7-9: Sc in each sc around. Round 10: [Sc in next 4 sc, dec] 6 times – 30 sc. Round 11: Sc in each sc around. Round 12: [Sc in next 3 sc, dec] 6 times – 24 sc. Rounds 13-16: Sc in each sc around. Round 17: [Sc in next 2 sc, dec] 6 times – 18 sc. Stuff head firmly. Round 18: [Sc in next sc, dec] 6 times – 12 sc. Continue stuffing as rounds are completed. Round 19: [Sc in next sc, dec] 4 times – 8 sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Ears (Make 2)

Begin at base of ear. Round 1: With (B) and larger hook, leaving a 6” yarn tail before slip knot, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook – 6 sc. Rounds 2-7: Sc in each sc around. Round 8: [Sc in next sc, dec] twice – 4 sc. Thread yarn needle with yarn end and weave yarn through last round of sts to close hole. Weave in end from needle but leave long tail from beginning round for attaching ears to head. Do not stuff.

Tail

With (B) and larger hook, ch 7; working in back bumps of beginning ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 6 sc. Fasten off leaving yarn end for sewing tail to body.

Heart Shaped Nose Patch/Eye Appliqué

Row 1: With smaller hook and (D), ch 2; 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook; turn. Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, [2 sc in next sc] twice; do not turn – 11 sc. Row 3: Working across row ends at the top of the heart shape, 2 sc in first row end, slip st between rows, 2 sc in next row end, slip st to next st. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

FINISHING

The head is designed with the smaller end as the crown of the head and the larger end as the muzzle. Using yarn tail from neck of body sew head to neck securely. Pin heart shaped nose to muzzle end. Using matching sewing thread and needle, attach securely by sewing. Likewise, pin heart appliqués to head or chest as desired and attach using sewing thread.Using photo as a guide, sew on button eyes using strong sewing thread or dental floss. Attach ears and tail using yarn ends. Embroider paw detail using E: beginning at the left hand edge of the paw, insert needle about ½” from tip of paw, bringing it straight through to the other side and pulling tightly to shape. Insert needle back into paw and out about ¼” from the first paw detail. Repeat one more time for a total of 3 paw details. Knot, weave in ends. Repeat for other 3 paws.
