Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 8mm [US L-11] Yarn needle, smaller crochet hook for fringe, 4″ (10 cm) square of heavy cardboard (optional)

A crochet fringe basket

GAUGE: 8 sc = 4″ (10 cm); 10 rows = 4″ (10 cm) with 4 strands held together. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Basket measures 42″ circumference x 14″ tall (106.68 x 35.5 cm). Notes. Basket is worked with 4 strands of yarn held together. Wind each ball of A-colored yarn into 2 separate balls. Basket is worked in continuous (spiral) rounds. Do not join at end of round unless stated otherwise. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed.

BASKET Base With 4 strands of A held together, ch 3; join with slip st in first ch to for a ring. Round 1: Work 6 sc in ring; join with slip st in first sc—6 sc. Place marker for beginning of round and move marker up as each round is completed. Work in continuous rounds, do not join until instructed. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each st around—12 sc. Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around—18 sc. Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around—24 sc. Round 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around—30 sc. Round 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; repeat from * around—36 sc. Round 7: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts; repeat from * around—42 sc. Round 8: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; repeat from * around—48 sc. Round 9: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 7 sts; repeat from * around—54 sc. Round 10: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts; repeat from * around—60 sc. Round 11: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts; repeat from * around—66 sc. Round 12: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts; repeat from * around—72 sc. Round 13: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 11 sts; repeat from * around—78 sc. Round 14: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 12 sts; repeat from * around—84 sc.

Sides Round 15: Working in back loops only, sc in each st around. Rounds 16–21: Sc in each st around. Round 22: *Sc in next 6 sc, sc in back loop of next 6 sc; repeat from * around. Rounds 23–26: Sc in each st around. Round 27: *Sc in back loop of next 6 sc, sc in next 6 sc; repeat from * around. Rounds 28–31: Sc in each st around. Rounds 32–41: Repeat Rounds 22–31. Round 42: Repeat Round 22. Rounds 43 and 44: Sc in each st around.

Handles Round 45: Sc in next 14 sts, ch 16 (handle), skip next 14 sts, sc in next 28 sts, ch 16 (handle), skip next 14 sts, sc in last 14 sc—56 sc and 2 ch-16 spaces. Round 46: *Sc in each st around to next ch-16 space, 16 sc in next ch-16 space; repeat from * around, sc in each remaining st—88 sc. Rounds 47–49: Sc in each st around; at end of last round, join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING Weave in ends.

Fringes Cut 210 strands of B, each 8″ (20.5 cm) long. Wrap yarn around 4″ (10 cm) cardboard square multiple times, cut across lower edge; repeat until 210 strands have been cut. Fold strand in half to form a loop. Insert smaller crochet hook in any unworked front loop of Round 21. Place fold on hook and draw fold through, forming a loop. Thread ends of strands through loop and pull to tighten. Repeat to attach fringe in each unworked front loop of Rounds 21, 26, 31, 36, and 41. Trim ends evenly to 2½” (6.5 cm).
