Smoothieâ„¢: 2 balls 2113 Oatmeal A, 1 ball each 9330 Tan B, 9205 Aqua C, 9235 Lemony D, and 9579 Lavender E

Susan Bates® Crochet Hook:

5mm [US H-8]

14″ [35 cm] long x 1″ [25 mm] wide leather purse handles with perforated holes for sewing, pompom maker, 5″ [13 cm] x 5″ [13 cm] cardboard, yarn needle

GAUGE: 17 sc = 4″ [10 cm]; 16½ rows = 4″ [10 cm] in single crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Tote measures 30″ [76 cm] circumference x 12″ [30 cm] tall.

Beach bag

NOTE

Tote is worked in two sections. The Base is worked in rows while the Body is worked in continuous rounds.

BASE

With B, ch 9.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across – 8 sc.

Rows 2-56: Ch 1, turn, sc into each st across – 8 sc.

Do not fasten off.

Body

Round 1 (Right Side): Ch 1, turn work to work along side edge, [sc in first row, ch 1, skip next row] across to next corner, turn to work along opposite edge of foundation ch, [sc in first st, ch 1, skip next st] across to next corner, turn work to work along opposite side edge, [sc in first row, ch 1, skip next row] across to next corner, turn to work along last row, [sc in first st, ch 1, skip next st] across to next corner – 128 sts; 64 sc and 64 ch-1 spaces.

Rounds 2-20: Sc in first ch-1 space, [ch 1, skip next st, sc in next ch-1 space] around – 128 sts; 64 sc and 64 ch. Cut B.

Rounds 21-42: Change to A and repeat Round 2.

Rounds 43-44: Working in back loops only, slip st in each st around.

FINISHING

Tassels (Make 1 with C and 1 with E) Wrap yarn around cardboard 60 times. Cut open along one edge. Place yarn strands in center across one 24″ [61 cm] length of yarn. Tie length around yarn strand bundle tightly and knot securely. Fold yarn strands so ends are even. Cut second 24″ [61 cm] length. Fold in half and tie tightly around bundle, 1″ [2.5 cm] below first knot. Knot securely and tuck ends in bundle. Trim ends evenly. Tie tassels to one purse handle.

Pompom

With D and pompom maker, make a 1½” [4 cm] pompom and tie to same purse handle.

Purse Handles

With yarn needle and A, sew purse handles in place securely.

Weave in ends.
