Size U.S. H/8 [5 mm] crochet hook or sizes needed to obtain gauge. Stitch marker. Yarn needle.
MEASUREMENTS
Approx 36″ (91.5 cm) square.
GAUGES
13 sc and 16 rows = 4″ [10 cm].
1 square = 11″ [28 cm].
Directions
Notes:
Blanket is made from 9 squares worked in joined rnds and then sewn tog.
Rnds 1–5 of each square are the base of each animal’s face and head. Work 3 squares with same color for each animal.
Facial and head pieces are made separately and sewn to base. On all pieces, fasten off leaving a long end for sewing.
Ch 3 at beg of rnd counts as dc.
Ch 4 at beg of rnd counts as tr.
Join all rnds with sl st to top of ch 3.
Ears (make 2)
With E, work same as lion’s ear.
Stripes (make 3)
With F, ch 6.
1st row: Working in back bumps only, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of chain 5 sts.
2nd row: Ch 1. 1 hdc in each of first 2 sts. 1 sc in each of next 2 sts. Sl st in last st.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Cheek (make 2)
With A, work same as Rnds 1–3 of Lion’s ear. 18 sc. Fasten off.
Nose
With F, ch 2.
1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
6 sc. Do not join.
2nd rnd: *1 sc in next sc. 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. 9 sc.
Fasten off.
BEAR (make 3)
Ears (make 2)
With C, work same as Lion’s ear.
Nose Work same as Tiger’s nose.
Snout
With G, ch 2.
1st to 4th rnds: Work same as Rnds 1–4 of Lion’s ear. 24 sc.
5th rnd: 1 sc in each st around. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
ASSEMBLY
Use photograph as a guide for placement of all pieces.
Lion: Sew ears in place as shown slightly overlapping edge of head.
Sew top and bottom of nose tog, center on base of face and sew in place. With H, embroider satin stitches for eyes and straight stitches for mouth.
Tiger: Sew ears same as lion. Position stripes at top of base, equally spaced apart, and sew in place. Embroider eyes and mouth same as lion.
Bear: Sew ears same as lion. Sew nose to snout. On snout, embroider mouth same as lion then sew piece in place. Embroider eyes same as lion.Arrange squares as shown in photograph or as desired. With wrong sides held tog and working through both thicknesses, with D, sew through matching stitches and chain sts in Round 10.
FINISHING
Border: 1st rnd: With RS facing, join D with sc in any st. 1 sc in each st and ch-3 sps between squares and working 5 sc in each ch-3 sp at outer corners (corner made). Join with sl st in first sc. 408 sc. Fasten off.
2nd rnd: With RS facing, join A with sl st in center sc of any 5-sc corner. Ch 3. 4 dc in same sp as sl st (corner made). *1 dc in each st to center st of next 5-sc corner. 5 dc in center st (corner made). Rep from * twice more. 1 dc in each st to end of rnd. Join. 424 sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc). 1 hdc next st. 3 hdc in next st. *1 hdc in each st to center st of next 5-dc corner. 3 hdc in center st. Rep from * twice. 1 hdc in each st to end of rnd. Join. 432 hdc. Fasten off.
4th rnd: Join D with sc in any st.
1 hdc in next st. 2 dc in next st.
1 hdc in next st. 1 sc in next st. sl st in next st. *1 sc in next st. 1 hdc in next st. 2 dc in next st. 1 hdc in next st. 1 sc in next st. sl st in next st. Rep from * around. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
