Sunny spread throw crochet create individual motifs that join together to complete this cheerful crochet throw that’s fresh and inspired. We use Cornmeal color in Red Heart Super Saver, but the sky’s the limit with over 100 colors to choose from. This sunny 52″ square spread creates an interesting focal point in the bedroom, living room, Zen room and more.

FPdc (Front Post double crochet): Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated st; yo and draw up lp, [yo and draw through 2 lps on hook] twice.

MOTIF

(make 64) Ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (right side): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 11 more dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 12 dc.

Round 2: Ch 3, FPdc around same dc as join (increase made), *dc in next dc, FPdc around same dc (increase made); repeat from * 10 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 24 sts. Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, FPdc around same FPdc, *dc in next 2 sts, FPdc around same FPdc; repeat from * 10 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 36 sts.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, FPdc around same FPdc, *dc in next 3 sts, FPdc around same FPdc; repeat from * 10 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 48 sts.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, FPdc around same FPdc, *dc in next 4 sts, FPdc around same FPdc; repeat from * 10 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 60 sts.

Round 6: Ch 4 (counts as first tr), working in back lps only, *dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, ch 3, tr in next st (corner made); repeat from * 2 more times, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, tr in next st, ch 3; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-4 – 60 sts and 4 ch-3 sps (corners).

Round 7: Ch 1, working in both lps, sc in same st as join, sc in next 14 sts, *5 sc in next ch-3 sp (corner made), sc in next 15 sts; repeat from * 2 more times, 5 sc in last ch-3 sp (corner made); join with sl st in first sc – 80 sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Arrange motifs into a square of 8 motifs x 8 motifs. With right sides facing each other, whipstitch sides of motifs together through both lps. Do not sew center sc of 5-sc corners together (you will work into these sc when making the edging).

EDGING

Note: When working sc in sts across edge of afghan to next 5-sc corner, take care to work in each st along edge of each motif including the center sc of each 5-sc corner

Round 1: Join yarn with sc in center sc of any 5-sc corner of afghan, work 2 more sc in same st, *sc in each st across to center sc of next 5-sc corner of afghan, 3 sc in center sc of 5-sc corner; repeat from * 2 more times, sc in each st to first sc; join with sl st in first sc – 676 sc (166 sc along each edge and 3 sc in each corner).

Round 2: Sl st in next sc (center sc of 3-sc corner of afghan), ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 more dc in same st, *dc in each st across to center sc of next 3-sc corner, 3 dc in center sc of 3-sc corner; repeat from * 2 more times, dc in each st to first dc; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 684 sts (168 dc along each edge and 3 dc in each corner).

Round 3: Sl st in next dc (center dc of 3-dc corner of afghan), ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 more dc in same st, *[dc in next 2 dc, FPdc around next st, sk dc behind the FPdc just made, dc in next 2 dc] 34 times, 3 dc in center dc of 3-dc corner; repeat from * 2 more times, [dc in next 2 dc, FPdc around next st, sk dc behind the FPdc just made, dc in next 2 dc] 34 times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 692 sts (170 sts along each edge and 3 sc in each corner).

Round 4: Working all dc in back lps only, sl st in next dc (center dc of 3-dc corner of afghan), ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 4 more dc in same st, *dc in next dc, [dc in next 2 dc, FPdc around next FPdc, sk FPdc top behind the FPdc just made, dc in next 2 dc] 34 times, dc in next dc, 5 dc in center dc of 3-dc corner; repeat from * 2 more times, dc in next dc, [dc in next 2 dc, FPdc around next FPdc, sk FPdc top behind the FPdc just made, dc in next 2 dc] 34 times, dc in next dc; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 708 sts (172 sts along each edge and 5 sc in each corner).

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
